Yorba Linda captured their third straight Century League Championship last night with a hard fought 5-4 victory over Esperanza. It was the second time this year Yorba Linda edged out a win against Esperanza. They beat the Aztecs 10-9 on Mar. 27. The Mustangs have have not lost in league play since 2012. The game did not start out looking like it would be low scoring as the Mustangs scored off the opening faceoff, but the defenses took over after that. In fact both goalies put on clinics – Yorba Linda’s Mark Rentfro made 15 saves and Esperanza’s Nick Carpenter rejected 18 shots. “It was a really tough loss. This was our first real chance to beat them in three years, and it was our last chance for the next couple of years. We were right there in it all game, and if we had been able to place our shots just a little bit better we could have won,” said Aztec Josh Fessey. Kaidon Newberry led the Mustangs with three goals and Jake Norton and JT Timmins added one each. Jake Aho (2g), Tommy Ferguson (1g), and Jacob Newport (1g,1a) scored for the Aztecs. Next up: Esperanza (8-4-1; 2-2) faces Servite (5-9; 1-3) on Monday, while Yorba Linda (13-3; 8-0) will play Temecula Valley (5-3-1; 2-2) on May 1.
