Santa Margarita junior Nicholas Parrino is the inaugural Workhorse of the Week sponsored by Athlete’s Choice. Parrino personifies the characteristics of an Athlete’s Choice Workhorse, he is hardworking, dependable, and does the little things that make the good teams great. Off the field, he works tirelessly in the weight room, classroom, and community. On the field, Parrino’s coaches and teammates can always count on him to play extremely hard between the lines, pick up a tough groundball or make the extra pass that can be the difference between winning and losing.
“I can’t think of a more deserving player for this award than Nick Parrino,” said Santa Margarita head coach Adam Guy. “He comes to practice every day and gives his maximum effort day in and day out, not just on the field, but in the classroom and in the weight room. He is constantly pushing himself and those around him and he makes everyone around him play at that level. He is also incredibly humble while he does all of this, a tremendous young man. Congrats Nick!”
Playing on an experienced and talented Eagles team that reached the County semi-finals last season, Parrino saw limited action as a sophomore. Looking to be an impact player in 2017 and beyond, Parrino responded the only way he knows how – hard work.
“Nick came to me in the beginning of the summer with a fire in his eye”, said Athlete’s Choice owner Nick Tintle. “You could tell he wanted to take his game to a new level.”
“Nick, like many of us are often told they are too small, or too slow, or can’t shoot fast enough to play at the next level. Nick had a choice – believe it or prove people wrong by working on your game furiously in the off-season. Nick made the choice to prove people wrong.”
“Nick spent 3 to 4 days a week at Athletes Choice, training to become a stronger, faster and a more skilled Lacrosse player and I believe he will have a breakout year in 2017.”
When Parrino isn’t hitting the weight room he’s hitting the books. He has a 4.0 gpa while balancing lacrosse with a course load that includes Mandarin Chinese, AP History, Algebra 2 Honors, and Geometry Honors. He is also a member of the California Scholarship Federation and National Honor Society. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Parrino wants to major in engineering in college.
To top it all off, Nick also finds time to give more than his fair share back to the community. He is one of only two students in the Santa Margarita Class of 2018 to receive the ‘Coeur a Coeur’ (Heart to Heart) Margaret Mary Award. This award recognizes each year a student achieves more than 120 hours of direct service over and above their Christian Service Projects. Nick spends approximately 150 hours a year volunteering as a Vacation Bible Study leader, helping out at Camp Pendleton for Operation Help A Hero, and coaching the middle school lacrosse program at Serra Catholic.
