The Westview Wolverines edged the visiting Rancho Bernardo Broncos 5-4 in a Palomar conference matchup Wednesday night to improve their season record to 7-1.
Junior Cole Giles got the Broncos started with a left-handed top shelf bounce shot in the first quarter to strike first blood, but Westview answered with three straight goals from senior Spencer Morrison and juniors Ryan Marasco and Cole Zarola to move ahead 3-1.
Broncos senior Duncan Copeland then proceeded to score the next two Bronco goals with surgical strikes from the outside, though in between, Westview’s senior defenseman Hans Geischen dialed up a long distance goal in transition, giving Westview the edge 4-3 with a little less than 11 minutes remaining.
Rancho Bernardo was finally able to capitalize on a man-up opportunity (one of 5 penalties committed by the Wolverines on the night) with 3:35 remaining in the 4th quarter when Sophomore Sam Dooley snuck in above GLE prior to the defensive slide to bury a close range shot and tie the game up 4-4. After a couple changes of possession, the game was decided by sophomore TJ Summers goal with 28 seconds left in the game when a failed Broncos clear left a wide open net to seal the victory for Westview 5-4.
Goalies for both teams (Holm/RB/13 saves and Ciemiewicz/Westview/10 saves) made several key doorstep saves all night to keep the affair low-scoring and the Broncos did a great job of dominating time of possession by moving the ball and maintaining patience. Westview Sophomore FOGO Nathan Wagner also had another solid game at the X going 11/13 (85%).
The Wolverines are scheduled to host the San Marcos Knights next Monday (4/11), while the Broncos host the Tahoma Bears this Friday night (4/8) making the trek from Washington state.
