The West Ranch girls, a second-year program coming off a 2-13 inaugural season, claimed their first victory of the season Friday night, winning 9-6 at Thousand Oaks.
In their season-opener Wednesday, the Wildcats nearly pulled off an impressive upset, leading visiting Chaminade — a contender for the US Lacrosse Southern Section North title — by a score of 7-5 at halftime before the Eagles rallied for a 9-7 victory.
Nevertheless, this 1-1 start already is better than last season for West Ranch, which started 0-3 and was 1-5 by the end of March — with two of the losses coming against Thousand Oaks.
Friday, five different Wildcats players scored, and West Ranch jumped on the Lancers early for a 5-2 halftime lead.
Sophomore goalie Sarah Ziskind backstopped the Wildcats defense with 11 saves.
