The West All-America team dropped a heart-breaker Sunday morning, conceding a goal with just 21 seconds to play to fall to New England, 8-7, and miss out on the playoff round at the Under Armour All-America Underclass games in Towson, Md.
The West, featuring a pair of Orange County rising seniors in Santa Margarita Catholic middie/attackman Hayden Ruiz (Boston U. commit) and San Clemente attackman/middie Peyton Garrett (High Point U. commit), finished 2-2 on the weekend. The team beat Long Island and Midwest while losing to Baltimore and New England. Baltimore went on to win the tournament, defeating Washington, D.C., 17-11, in Sunday’s final.
Against New England, the West started strong and took an early 2-0 lead after Garrett scored on an extra man shot from the lower right, beating the goalie on the near pipe. The game stayed close–no team taking more than a two-goal lead at any point–and the West had plenty of chances to win it outright. Joe Lang (St. Ignatius–SF/Harvard commit) scored a pair and had some excellent chances late, as did Maryland-commit Colin MacIlvennie (Eastside Catholic HS, Wash.). Ruiz had a solid game, winning several key ground balls and setting up a some great chances. Andrew Tien (Bishops School–San Diego/uncommitted) also had a goal for the West.
