Week 1 Games To Watch

The 2015 high school lacrosse season opens today, with (at least) five games on the schedule, including a Top 10 matchup between Crespi and Thousand Oaks. Here’s a quick look at some of the best matchups this week:

Today: No. 5 Crespi at No. 8 Thousand Oaks, 6 p.m.: It’s Day 1 and already we have a meeting of two Top 10 teams. The last time these teams met was in the 2013 playoffs, when the Celts eliminated the Lancers in the second round.

Monday: No. 14 Culver City at No. 16 Chaminade Prep, 5:30 p.m.: Would it be a stretch to say the head-to-head tie-breaker for playoff positioning is already a consideration? Last year, the Centaurs beat the Eagles 7-3 and went on to make the playoffs. Chaminade did not. Hmm.

Tuesday: No. 9 Westlake at No. 10 Redondo Union: Another matchup of Top 10 teams and another playoff rematch. The Warriors knocked off the Sea Hawks 11-10 in the first round last year.

Wednesday: No. 2 Loyola at No. 4 Oak Park, 7 p.m.: Part of the Knight’s Challenge organized by Orange County squads Foothill and Los Alamitos, this one actually will be played in Ventura County. Best we can tell, the Eagles and Cubs haven’t played each other since 2009.

Friday: No. 3 Harvard Westlake at No. 12 Agoura, 7 p.m.: It’s the season opener for the Chargers, who last faced the Wolverines in the 2013 playoffs, losing 16-8.

Saturday, March 7: No. 13 Oaks Christian at No. 7 Peninsula, 10 a.m.: The will have two games under the belts by next Saturday, including one on the home field they affectionately call the cow paddock. An early start, a long bus ride and a game on a cow paddock. Will Oaks be up for it?
