Under Armour West Face Critical Showdown

After two days of Pool Play at the Under Armour All-America Underclass tournament at Towson University in Baltimore, Md., the West team featuring rising seniors Santa Margarita Catholic middie Hayden Ruiz (Boston University commit) and San Clemente attack/middie Peyton Garrett (High Point University commit) face a critical must-win game Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Baltimore time vs. the New England team. Should they win, the West would advance to the playoff round along with Baltimore (4-0) from their pool division. The other pool round will feature the teams from Philadephia and Washington, DC, both with 3-0 records prior to Sunday’s game.

The West lost to Baltimore on Friday, 15-11, as Garrett had a goal and an assist while Ruiz had an assist. On Saturday, the West rallied late to knock off Long Island, 8-7, in overtime as Jake Seau (Bishops School, San Diego) scored after Long Island squandered a chance to win. Ruiz had an assist in that win, which featured a late goal by Seau’s high school teammate, Andrew Tien, with just 4 seconds left to play.

Late Saturday in the sweltering Baltimore sun (95 degrees at game time), the West knocked off the Midwest, 13-7, to set up in the showdown with New England (2-1) on Sunday. Ruiz had two goals in the win over the Midwest, while Garrett added an assist.
