The San Clemente Tritons lacrosse team dedicated their important South Coast League game last night to classmate Saylor Voris, who lost her two-year battle with Leukemia earlier in the day. Saylor’s brave fight has been a source of inspiration for the school since her diagnosis.
With heavy but determined hearts the Tritons visited the Tesoro Titans, for an always-competitive clash between the two perennial powers in the South Coast League, and emerged with a 7-4 win.
Kieran Regan got SC on the board, with a lefty goal following a Jack Renard assist. The score remained 1-0 as the first quarter ended.
Branden Wilson opened the second quarter for SC with a sweet solo shot. Tesoro responded with a Cameron King assist to a Cole Spooner goal. Jack Renard answered back, with a score from a David Howren assist. A solo goal from King brought Tesoro within one. The half ended with San Clemente up, 3-2.
SC then took control, displaying efficient ball movement through the third period. Three quick scores involving a Josh Ortiz assist to a Wilson goal, Matt Keany to Renard, then Nick Lemus to Keany put SC up 6-2.
From that point, there was no denying the Tritons on this night. Goals were traded, but the outcome was never in doubt. Final score: San Clemente 7, Tesoro 4.
The low score reflects excellent goalie play from both sides. Austin Boyer (Tritons) and Gunner Garn (Titans) racked up saves aplenty.
For SC, Wilson and Renard notched two scores apiece. Regan, Keany and Lemus added one goal each.
King, Spooner, Jonathan Gibson and Blake Warner each scored for Tesoro.
The Tritons travel to Trabuco Hills this Friday, for an important league contest. The Titans take on Aliso Niguel this Thursday.
