San Clemente completed a successful spring break road trip to the San Francisco Bay area with an 8-7 overtime win against the 2015 California-North Coast CIF defending champ San Ramon Valley. For the week SC went 2-1, opening with a 21-9 rout of Menlo School then losing to Bellarmine Prep 10-8.
Branden Wilson netted an unassisted goal in OT off the dodge to notch the win for SC after they overcame an early deficit. San Ramon Valley jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead early in the first quarter but SC mounted their comeback with two goals by David Howren (3 goals, 4 GB’s) and goals by Josh Sanchez and Matt Keany (1 goal, 1 assist) to end the first half down by a goal. Then the SC defense settled down and started winning GB’s with Caleb Bozarth (4GB’s) leading the way and 2GB’s each by Cade Norland, Ryan Crawford, Omeed Farhadi and Lance Buckley. SC held the high-powered SRV offense to only two goals in the second half.
Nick Lemus added another SC goal but SRV tied the game with 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter and held off a furious SC rally to send the game to OT. SC’s Tanner Wright secured a key ground ball after the OT face off to give ball possession to the Tritons before Wilson (2 goals, 2 assists) scored the winner. Additionally, Harrison Webb stepped into play goalie for SC as senior captain Austin Boyer was out due to illness. Webb made several key saves in the 2nd half to help secure the win.
San Clemente returns to league play against Aliso Viejo and Trabuco Hills this week while San Ramon Valley hosts SoCal powerhouses Palos Verdes and Poway.
