The Trabuco Hills Mustangs boys’ lacrosse team traveled to San Clemente last night, for the first South Coast League game in 2015.
The upstart Mustangs, unbeaten at 6-0, entered the game with confidence against the young Tritons, at 1-4.
Both teams came out aggressive. Matt Keany broke the ice for San Clemente in the first minutes, with a nice solo shot. Trabuco responded with a Jason Kauo goal. An Eric Zoe assist to David Howren put the Tritons up again. But an Andrew Blume assist to Harrison Evans again tied it at two goals apiece, with just minutes gone by in the game.
The Mustangs began to pull away at the end of the first, with another Evans goal and a sweet underhand shot by Billy Baron. The quarter ended with THHS up, 4-2.
But the Tritons are determined to defend their league title. A Max Lepley (Whittier) assist to Jack Renard (US Merchant Marine Academy) brought SC within one. Then an acrobatic Renard solo shot tied things up.
Momentum continued in San Clemente’s favor, as Garrett Eslick, Nick Lemus (Air Force) and Howren scored to close the half with SC leading 7-4.
The SC scoring barrage continued through the third, with five unanswered Triton goals. The quarter ended with the Tritons firmly in control, up 12-7.
Trabuco matched the San Clemente scoring pace from that point on, but was not able to narrow the gap. Final score: Tritons 15, Mustangs 10.
Renard led the Tritons with 4 goals, along with Lemus (3), Eslick (3) and Howren (2). Zoe, Keany and Riley Paredes scored once each.
For Trabuco, Evans notched 4 goals. Jason Kauo added 2, with Baron, Wyatt Koudelka, Jaryd Flores and John Kauo scoring once each.
Next up for the Tritons will be San Diego powerhouse Poway, Friday night at home. The Mustangs will travel to Aliso Niguel Thursday night for another important league matchup.
