The no. 5 San Clemente Triton boys lacrosse team visited the no. 6 Trabuco Hills Mustangs Thursday night. The highly-anticipated game featured two foes each looking to establish itself as the team to beat in the always-competitive South Coast League.
The Tritons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with goals by Branden Wilson (1 goal, 1 assist), David Howren (1 goal, 1 assist), and Matt Keany (2 goals, 1 assist). However, the high-powered Trabuco Hills offense, led by league-leading scorer Harrison Evans (Colorado Mesa, 2 goals), scored three quick goals as the half closed to tie the game.
The second half featured relentless defense, with constant pressure placing a premium on clears, ground balls and scoring. The Triton defense, led by Ryan Crawford (5 ground balls), Omeed Farhardi (4 gb’s), Caleb Bozarth (3 gb’s), and goalie Austin Boyer (Cleveland State – 12 saves) shut down the Mustangs — who had been averaging 12 goals per game — to just four. The Mustangs defense was just as aggressive, led by Jason Kauo (5 gb’s) and goalie Nick Wilson with 6 saves.
It all came down to the fourth quarter, with the score tied. Nick Lemus (Air Force) took control in crunch time, notching 2 goals in the last four minutes to seal the deal for the Tritons. Final score San Clemente 7, Trabuco Hills 4.
