East coast lacrosse has their blizzards and snow banks. Orange County lacrosse has March Saturday evenings at Dana Hills High School with ocean breezes and ocean views. Such was the setting for Saturday’s game between Trabuco Hills High School and Dana Hills.
The Mustangs who have been coming out of the gate slowly this year, having been outscored 5-4 in the first quarter in their first three games of the season, came out on fire on Saturday. The Mustangs jumped out to a 9-1 first quarter lead on three goals each from captains Harrison Evans and Jake Marthens, two goals from John Kauo, and a goal from Wyatt Koudelka. Only a hard-fought goal from the Dolphins’ Drew Bailey interrupted the Mustangs’ flow.
The Dolphins did not back down and battled back, starting the second quarter with goals from Bailey and Kobi Greenberg to tighten up the score. The Mustang offense was far from finished however, as Koudelka added his second goal of the contest and attackman Troy Fenner found the back of the net twice. Kauo and Evans rounded out the first half scoring giving Trabuco a 14-3 advantage at halftime.
The second half turned into a defensive battle with the Dana Hills defense becoming very stingy, giving up only one third quarter goal, a nice top shelf rip from Billy Barron. The Mustangs saw some great defensive work as well with contributions from Justin Wetmore, Josh McEnally, Matt Henery, and the defensive player of the game Noah Cook who had 3 takeaways to go with his numerous ground balls. As the sun dipped lower into the Pacific, the Mustangs enjoyed a 15-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Two goals from Jared Flores in the fourth quarter and Barron’s second made the 18-3 final score.
Having claimed the 2015 “Battle of the Hills’, the Mustangs (4-0) face off against Newport Harbor and Mater Dei next week before entering their very demanding South Coast League schedule. Dana Hills (1-4) gets ready for a Tuesday game against those other Mustangs from Yorba Linda.
