The Trabuco Hills Mustangs knocked off the Woodbridge Warriors, MaxLaxOC’s #16 ranked team in Orange County on Saturday afternoon.
It was cold, wet and windy but that did not dampen the spirits of the boys on the field. The first half was all Trabuco as they raced out to a 5-0 lead at halftime on the brilliant play of captains Jake Marthens and Harrison Evans with two goals each in the first half. The Mustang dominance in the first half was not all offense however. Led by sophomore goalie Nick Wilson and excellent defensive pressure from junior Jared Tanner the Mustang D held Woodbridge scoreless. The Warriors made some nice adjustments however at halftime and came back to make this a game worth sitting in the rain to watch. The Warriors outscored the Mustangs 7-6 in the second half but fell to the Mustangs, 11-7.
The win helps Trabuco Hills kick off the season on the right foot with a nice win over a ranked opponent. Head Coach Johnny Rodriguez took the win in stride saying “Hey, a win is a win but now we focus on Tuesday and our game against Marina.”
Leading Mustang scorers were Marthens with four goals and an assist followed by Evans with three goals. Senior Joey Clark got on track with two goals and starting sophomores Billy Barron and Wyatt Koudelka each turned in a goal in the season opener for the Mustangs.
