Cross town rivals Mission Viejo High School and  Trabuco Hills High School faced off in a non-league match up on Thursday night at Trabuco Hills. The Mustangs did not disappoint the home crowd as they scored early and led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter on a goal from Harrison Evans on a gorgeous feed from Andrew Blume at the top of the crease. It looked as if the Diablos had come to play and were giving the Mustangs fits on the defensive side of the ball.

In the second quarter the Mustangs got their second goal of the night from Wyatt Koudelka assisted by Billy Barron to go up 2-0. The Diablos got on the board next with a nice bob and weaving dodge shot from Evan Hunter to bring the score to 2-1 .   Faced with the prospects of an upset, the Mustangs,  sparked by a nice goal from Jake Marthens who just committed to Arizona State University took over the game. Trabuco adds goals in the second from Blume, Koudelka and Evans as the two teams go into halftime with the score 7-1 in favor of the Mustangs.

The Mustangs never looked back and dominated the second half in large part due to the face off dominance of Howie Gundy s who won 14 out of 20 (70%) of the games faceoffs. The Mustangs also dominated on ground balls with a 31-4 advantage in the game and the defense was outstanding with stellar performances from Noah Cook, Ryan John, Patrick Zanio, Kyle Yano, goalie Nick Wilson and LSM Jason Rivera.

A nice effort from Mission Viejo goalie Alex Walker who after making numerous saves in the first half on a barrage of shots on goal (33) from the Mustangs finally started to wear down and Trabuco was off to the races. In the third quarter Trabuco had five separate players fin dthe  cage including freshman Jason Kauo with his first goal of the young season.

Next up for the Mustangs is the  battle of the Hills as Trabuco Hills will take on Dana Hills this Saturday.
