The Mustangs tried to put the game away early and upped their lead to 10-7 going into the fourth quarter behind two goals from Jake Marthens. The Sailors had no intentions of going down without a fight, and they tied it up late in the fourth quarter aided by man up opportunities. With the game tied at 11, Mustangs goalie Nick Wilson made two incredible saves with under a minute in regulation to not only keep the Mustangs alive but to also give them a final possession and a chance to win in regulation. After a successful clear Evans fed Marthens who buried the game winner with 13 seconds on the clock.

Marthens (4 goals) and Barron (2 goals and 2) sparked the Mustangs’ offense. Koudelka (2 goals and an assist), Evans (2 goals), Nguyen (1 goal), and John Kauo (2 assists) also figured in the Trabuco scoring.

Alex Fuller’s two-way play led the Sailers with three goals, four assists, four ground balls and a knock down.  Kole Escher had three goals, one assist and three ground balls.  Nathan Chaness also played a great all around game with two goals, one assist, won 15 face-offs, six ground balls and a take away.  Chris Buchanan had one goal and six ground balls.  John Mooers also scored one goal and had three ground balls. Freshman Alex Pearce scored his first goal of the season leading the Sailors in their fourth quarter come-back (also assisted one goal and had two ground balls).  Sailor Goalkeeper Eli Gutierrez made eight saves and goal keeper Antonio Rossi made two and had one take-away. Defensively, the Sailors were led by Liam Whelan (three groundballs, two takeaways, two knockdowns) and Andrew Craft (three ground balls and one takeaway).  Other players that contributed include PJ Steiner winning three face-offs and Chas Beek with four ground balls.

Next up for the 4-3 Mustangs is a Saturday game against Mt. St. Joseph’s (MD). Newport Harbor will host Mater Dei on Saturday.
