Torrey Pines Tops CdM in Overtime

Saturday’s showdown between western Top 10 powers Corona del Mar and Torrey Pines lived up to the hype.Following a second in half which neither team scored consecutive goals and CdM grabbed the lead four times only to tied four times, Torrey Pines won the overtime faceoff and called timeout to set up their offense.  After the restart, the Falcons worked the ball around to Spencer Small who found the far corner with with a low to high bounce shot to win the game and ignite the celebration. It was the first lead for the Falcons since late in the first half.

CdM, ranked No. 3 in the Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse Experts Poll and No. 5 by Nike/Lacrosse Magazine, came into the game with a 7-0 record including wins over Foothill, St. Margaret’s, and Brighton, UT.  The Falcons (No.6/No. 4) had a 7-1 record.  The only blemish was a loss to No. 2 Regis Jesuit.

CdM scored first and held a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.  From that point forward the game was tied at two-goal increments at every break. 4-4 at halftime, 6-6 after three quarters, and 8-8 at the end of regulation.  Torrey Pines scored three goals within 40 seconds late in the first half to take a one goal lead.  Other than that it was back and forth with no team really gaining any traction.

Eric Fries led the Sea Kings with four points (3g, 1a).  Jordan Greenhall (2g, 1a), Sachin Gokhale (1g), Will Favreau (1g), Ryan Meckler (1g), and Stephen Von Der Ahe (1a) completed the scoring for the Sea Kings. Jason Simaan won 12/19 faceoffs. Nick Guizan had 9 saves.

Next up: Corona del Mar (7-1) takes a Spring Break trip to Arizona where they will play Desert Vista (5-2), Notre Dame Prep (3-2) and Brophy Prep(3-30)  on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, respectively.
