Torrey Pines High School ran away from Cathedral Catholic High School 13-5 in the season opener between two teams ranked in the Top 5 in Southern California by USA Today. The No. 1 Falcons dominated possession and the scoring in the first half, jumping out to a 7-0 lead by the intermission. The Falcons were led by Henry Hollens’ faceoff domination and Jackson Lienhart’s 5 first half goals. Brandon Trentalange and Hollens also tallied goals in the first half.
Energized by home crowd support the Dons started the second half with renewed determination, and scored off the opening faceoff. Noah Assaraf’s 10 yard rip made it 7-1. Any hopes for a heroic comeback were short-lived though. Marc Lefferdink came right back to put the Falcons back up by 7 before Cathedral’s Cole Wolfson and Torrey’s Spenser Small traded goals to make it 9-2 after three quarters.
Hollen extend his team’s lead to eight when he finished a feed from Lefferdink in the opening seconds of the final frame. Ryan Fazio, Morrison Mirer, and Dekker Stebel scored in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring for Cathedral Catholic. Lienhart, Ara Suhadolnik, and Jacob Belshin tallied fourth quarter goals for Torrey Pines.
Cathedral goalie Will Howard stood up to relentless pressure in the first half, and made some outstanding saves to keep the score as close as it was.
