Tim Shaeffer Named Head Coach at Poway

Tim Shaeffer has been named the new head coach of the Poway High School boys lacrosse team.  The former Cathedral Catholic assistant joins the program immediately to start preparing for the upcoming 2019 season, which begins with varsity and junior varsity tryouts in just over one month.

“I could not be more excited to have the opportunity to be the head coach of the Poway Titans,” Shaeffer said.  “It is a tremendous opportunity to bring my experience as both a coach and player to a group of athletes fortunate enough to be part of one of the most prestigious programs in the state of California.”

Shaeffer grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, and was a standout lacrosse player for Annapolis High School, earning All-County, High School All-American, and Under Armor All-American honors. He went on to to play Division 1 NCAA lacrosse at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) for three years, starting at LSM and close defense in two of those seasons.  Shaeffer helped the Retrievers to a conference championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

At the conclusion of his junior season Shaffer transferred to the University of Maryland (College Park) where he was a close defender on the 2012 Terrapins team that defeated Lehigh, Johns Hopkins, and Duke before ultimately losing to Loyola in the 2012 NCAA National Championship game.

After college, Shaeffer took over as the head Junior Varsity Coach at St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis, competing in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).  He was also the head coach of several club and rec programs including the Annapolis Hawks.

Shaeffer moved to California in early 2018 to undertake a new professional opportunity in the Industrial Auction industry.  He immediately got tied into the local lacrosse community by serving as the varsity 1st assistant coach and Head JV coach at Cathedral Catholic.

Shaeffer replaces fellow UMBC alum Zack Burke who departed for Westlake High School in Austin, TX.  Poway is coming off of its second straight San Diego CIF Open Division Playoff Final Four appearance in 2018 and won back-to-back San Diego CIF Championships in 2015 and 2016.

Shaeffer takes over a young group of Titans that will be led by a strong core of veterans including NCAA Division 1 commits Eli Butler (Wagner) and Marquez White (Princeton), as well as senior midfielder Austin Contreras, junior goalie Ben Looges, and junior defender Christian Vierra.

Coach Shaeffer’s Titans will open the season on March 1st at home against Valley Center.
