Trabuco Gets By Servite

The Friars of Servite High School came out quick and caught Trabuco Hills by surprise with their quick attack offense. The Mustangs gave up two quick goals from Chase Anderson and Jack Brennan before Kyle Cartwright added a third in the first quarter to give the Friars an early 3-0 lead.  Trabuco Hills came back with two of their own to narrow the score to 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.

The Mustang offense found their rhythm in the second quarter and got goals from Billy Barron, Harrison Evans, Andrew Blume (3 assists) and Jake Marthens.   Servite kept the game within reach with a goal from Stephen Shatynski, but Trabuco Hills enjoyed a 7-4 lead at intermission.

The Mustangs continued to apply the pressure after the intermission with two goals from 2014 Marthens, a goal from Wyatt Koudelka on a beautiful feed from Blume , and  a sweet John Kauo t under handed flip shot with his back to the goal to put Trabuco on top 11-6 after three. The Servite Friars never backed down and kept the game within striking distance with Cartwright and Anderson scoring their second goals of the night.

The action did not stop there however, with Servite getting goals from Heil and Armienta and the Mustangs finished off the Friars with goals from, Marthens. Evans, Barron and Koudelka who also had 3 assists on the night.  Marthens, a 2014 All-League attackman finished the night with 7 goals and an assist.

The contest had plenty of offensive action but was actually won on ground balls with the Mustangs enjoying a 34 to 12 advantage.  Mustang defender Noah Cook had 5 ground balls and 2 timely takeaways and Patrick Zanio had 5 ground balls as well. The Mustangs defense also got outstanding play from wingman and defenseman Jason Rivera. 

Trabuco Hills starts their young season with 2 straight wins and Coach Johnny Rodriguez had this to say after the game. “I am always happy with a win but I thought our defense could have played better, we still have a lot of work to do.”

The Mustangs will face Mission Viejo and Dana Hills next week as they continue to seek out a playoff spot.

Servite hosts Marina on Saturday.
