The Week in Review (Part 1)

maxlax-shield.jpgAnd then there was one. Saint Margaret’s lost twice up in NorCal. Beckman showed they are a Contender (capital C intended) by upsetting CdM. So JSerra is the last man standing,

the lone undefeated team not only in the OC but also in California. We still have half a season and the playoffs to go, but hats off to JSerra for a job well done.

As we head into the next week, Foothill and JSerra appears to be the clear 1 and 2. JSerra is undefeated, but Foothill (9-1) is ranked No. 1. Thursday night the only vote that really matters will be cast, the scoreboard at JSerra Catholic High School. Of course, will be there providing live Twitter updates and covering all the action.

The ordering of the next few positions is up for debate to say the least. Beckman beat CdM. CdM beat San Clemente. San Clemente beat Tesoro. Tesoro beat Santa Margarita. Santa Margarita beat Beckman. Beckman beat CdM. Oh, wait I already said that. Anyways you get the point. And to throw more mud in the water, No. 3 St. Margaret’s has not played any of those guys.

Here is how our Top 10 fared last week (sorry, ran out of time. I will get to 11 through 20 in Part 2 later today).

No. 1. Foothill
Week Record: 2-0
Overall Record: 9-1 SOS Ranking: 2
Up next: at JSerra on Thursday
Synopsis:The Foothill offense is firing on all cylinders. They are averaging close to 18 goals per game in their last four games and outscored their opponents 38-4 last week. Can they keep it rolling against JSerra?

No. 2. JSerra
Week Record: 2-0
Overall Record: 11-0 SOS Ranking: 4
Up next: Santa Margarita on Tuesday; JSerra on Thursday
Synopsis:Speaking of firing on all cylinders, JSerra outscored their opponents 35-9 last week. And while most of the oohs and aahs are directed towards the JSerra offense, their defense is quietly going about their business. The Lions have allowed only four goal per game over the last five. Whats going to happen when the immovable object meets the irresistible force on Thursday?

No. 3. St. Margaret’s
Week Record: 1-2
Overall Record: 6-2 SOS Ranking: 5
Up next: Los Al on Wednesday; at Cathedral Catholic on Saturday
Synopsis:The Tartans hit a bit of speed bump up in the Bay Area, losing by two to St. Ignatius and in OT to Brophy Prep, the Arizona State Champs. They may slip in the rankings but they have been in this position before. How good was the competition last week? The Tartans’ SOS soared to fifth most difficult in the CIF Southern Section after last week’s games.

No. 4. Corona del Mar
Week Record: 1-1
Overall Record: 6-1 SOS Ranking: 23
Up next: at Marin Catholic on Monday; at San Ramon Valley on Wednesday
Synopsis:The Sea Kings also fell from the unbeaten ranks last week with the loss to Beckman. The meet of the Sea Kings’ schedule is coming up. CdM’s SOS will get a bump this week. They travel up North this week to play the 8th and 9th ranked teams in the North Coast CIF.

No. 5. San Clemente
Week Record: 2-0
Overall Record: 7-2 SOS Ranking: 8
Up next: at Arapahoe on Tuesday; at Smoky Hill on Wednesday; at Cherry Creek on Thursday
Synopsis:San Clemente got the upper hand in the South Coast League race when they beat Tesoro last week. For the fourth time in five games between the two rivals, one goal was the difference. The Tritons travel to Denver this week where they will play the 4th ranked team in Colorado (Arapahoe) and the 6th ranked (Cherry Creek).

No. 6. Santa Margarita
Week Record: 2-0
Overall Record: 8-2 SOS Ranking: 13
Up next: at JSerra on Tuesday; at Palos Verdes on Thursday; at Mater Dei on Saturday
Synopsis:The Eagles dispatched of pesky up-and-comer Mater Dei last week. This week they play the role of the pesky up-and-comer when the face JSerra. That game will have a lot to say about the Trinity League race. Not to be overlooked is 1-7 Palos Verdes on Thursday who will be hungry to claim at least one win over an OC team this year.

No. 7. Beckman
Week Record: 2-0
Overall Record: 8-2 SOS Ranking: 29
Up next: Woodbridge on Monday; at Northwood on Thursday
Synopsis:The Patriots pulled off the biggest upset of the season when they beat CdM 10-9. We’ve had the same Top 5 all season, and this was the first time anyone outside the Top 5 has come away a winner against the Top 5. Winners of eight straight, Beckman is looking legit.

No. 8. Mater Dei
Week Record: 2-0
Overall Record: 8-3 SOS Ranking: 38
Up next: Servite on Tuesday; Santa Margarita on Saturday
Synopsis:Mater Dei ventured out into Top 10 land for the first time last week, and they were not greeted with a bouquet of roses. In a tough week against Trinity League foes Santa Margarita and JSerra, the Monarchs lost both games by a combined score of 28-8. They get a chance to make amends against Santa Margarita on Saturday

No. 9. Tesoro
Week Record: 1-1
Overall Record: 7-4 SOS Ranking: 3
Up next: El Toro on Saturday
Synopsis:The Titans continue to battle their way through a difficult schedule. Their last three losses have all been by one goal to top flight competition. They should be battle-hardened come playoff time.

No. 10. Great Oak
Week Record: 2-0
Overall Record: 8-2 SOS Ranking: 19
Up next: at Yorba Linda on Monday; at Mission Viejo on Friday; Servite on Saturday
Synopsis:Hiding out in the hinterlands of Temecula, the Wolf Pack has quietly accumulated an 8-2 record with some quality wins. Tonight’s game at Yorba Linda should be a good one.
