Garn posted 18 saves on the night, including 12 in the first half alone, while facing 48 Tritons shots. His offensive teammates were in form as well as they dominated the faceoff and groundball battle early to forge a quick 6-2 lead after the first quarter. Matt Costanzo (2 goals), AJ Chiono (2g, 1a), Brandon Mayo (1g), Alex Boyle (1g), Sage Devault (3g, 1a) and defenseman Matt Adam (1g) all scored in the first quarter to establish Tesoro’s intentions. The Tritons countered with goals by Collin Zines (4g) and Jack Renard (2g, 3a).
San Clemente out-scored the Titans 3-2 in the second quarter to narrow the gap with senior Robbie Burns (2g, 5a) scoring one and assisting on another, but Tesoro opened the second half impressively, getting a pair of Chase Warner (4g) goals and a Jake Douglas (1g, 2a) rip to take a 9-6 lead. But SC rallied, as Renard, Austin Streeter (2g) and Peyton Garrett (3g, 1a) all scored to tie the game at 9-9.
Tesoro answered the bell, scoring a pair of short-handed goals and eventually pulling ahead, 16-11. SC had a late three-goal rally to try to force overtime, but Garn made a point-blank save with five seconds to go to ensure the Tritons would get no closer.
The Tritons defense was led by junior Stone Sims, who battled Salisbury-bound Tesoro attackman Douglas. The Tesoro defense–led by Adam and Connor Toohey–forced 14 Triton turnovers. Sims, Adam Brownell and Streeter had two forced turnovers each for San Clemente.
Other goal scorers were Jordan Riggs for San Clemente and Blake Warner for Tesoro.
Tesoro improves to 10-1 on the season while SC falls to 9-4.
