No. 9 Tesoro took down No. 11 Los Alamitos Wednesday night in both teams second game and second game of the Knights Challenge.
After game opening fast breaks by both teams that failed to result in a goal, Tesoro senior Matt Costanzo gave the Titans an early 1-0 lead. Los Al’s twin attackmen Tyler (2 goals) and Cody Miller went rip for rip to put their team up 3-2 by the middle of the second quarter. Riley Finn (2 goals) finished a look to the crease with a minute left to tie the game at threes before heading into the break.
While Los Alamitos did a good job of playing controlled patient offense, the story of their game was their inability to convert on man up or clear when it counted. Tesoro would go up 5-3 directly off Los Al mistakes as Costanzo stepped in unguarded at the point for the man up squad and Sage Devault (2 goals) picking up a dropped pass on an attempted clear finishing on the doorstep. During the third and fourth quarter the Griffins didn’t convert one of their four man up opportunities. To start the fourth quarter, down by two, Los Al failed five clears in a row that amazingly didn’t end up costing them immediately.
After a goal by Brandon Ezell to bring Los Al within one, Costanzo almost let Los Al back in the game when he slashed the offensive middie he was guarding while the ball was two passes away. Los Al could not convert again and Tesoro pulled away in the final two minutes to win, 7-4 and improve to 2-0 on the season. Los Al fell to 0-2.
