St. Margaret’s Wins Two Critical Trinity League Matches

taAfter defeating Trinity league foe Servite High School on Tuesday night 16-2, St. Margaret’s Episcopal School continued its march toward the playoffs Thursday afternoon with a convincing win over arch-rival Santa Margarita Catholic High School 17-6.

The Tartans improved their Trinity League leading record to 5-0 with one all-important regular season match-up remaining on Saturday afternoon against JSerra Catholic High School.

St. Margaret’s was in control all the way on Tuesday’s senior night home game against the Friars. Servite’s defense was overwhelmed by the Tartan’s fast-paced, team-first style of attack. Tartan goals were scored by senior attackman Chase Williams (4g, 5a), freshman attackman Samuel Harnisch (3g), senior attackman Alex Waller (3g), junior middie Josh Davis (2g, 1a), junior middie Hunter Edington (1g, 2a), and sophomore middie Ryan Harnisch (3g, 1a). Senior attackman Riley Pok, and senior middies James Yorke and Willy Schmall saw extensive action on Tuesday night as well. The Tartan’s offense is clicking on all cylinders with 44 goals in the last three games.

On the other side of the field against Servite, the Tartan’s defensive was just as dominating limiting the Friars to just two goals on the evening. Senior defenseman Brandon Suchand (4gb), senior LSM Scott McGowan (4gb), sophomore defenseman Fernando Delgado (3gb, 1a), sophomore defenseman John Connelly (2gb), and senior defensive middie Winston Robinson (1gb) dominated on ground balls and continued to look strong on clears. For the game, the Tartans tight-knit defensive crew was successful on 10 of 12 clear attempts. Ryan Harnisch dominated the face-off X for St. Margaret’s winning 16 of 23 starts. Senior goalie Austin Birch made five saves.

On Thursday afternoon the Tartans faced long-time rival Santa Margarita in the final regular-season home game of the year for St. Margaret’s. Fighting for a playoff spot, the Eagles came out determined in their last regular season game of the year, but the Tartan’s constant attacking pressure was too much for Santa Margarita to handle. The Tartans went up 4-1 in the first frame and won the match pulling away scoring 17 goals on 49 shots on the afternoon. This time it was Alex Waller (7g), Chase Williams (3g, 5a), and Samuel Harnish (4g) leading the way for the high-scoring Tartans. Goals were also scored by Ryan Harnisch (1g, 1a), sophomore attackman Paddy Fallon (1g, 1a), and Josh Davis (1g). Sophomore middie Hunter Edington added two critical assists and Riley Pok and James Yorke provided valuable minutes for the Tartan’s balanced scoring attack, which seems to get big-time games from different parts of its offense each week.

Defensively against the Eagles, St. Margaret’s took away Santa Margarita’s inside game and forced the Eagles to shoot from the perimeter. Tartan’s goalie Austin Birch made 10 saves and the Tartan’s defensive unit recorded 19 groundballs with Brandon Suchand leading the way with nine. Fernando Delgado, Scott McGowan, and Winston Robison had strong games as well especially on clears and rides pressuring the Eagles’ attackmen into giving up the ball in the offensive end on a number of occasions. Ryan Harnisch and Willy Schmall combined to control 25 of 29 face-offs.

The Tartans return to action on Saturday afternoon against the Trinity League’s second place team, JSerra Catholic High School at the Lion’s home field in the regular season finale for both teams.
