St. Margaret’s retained the No. 1 ranking in the MaxLaxOC coaches poll, but the Tartans — a unanimous preseason No. 1 — received only 11 of 14 first-place votes this week.  After a late start and a rainout against Westlake last week, the Tartans’ only official game thus far is an 8-7 win over Park City (UT).

Meahwhile, Mater Dei and Foothill chipped away at the Tartans’ advantage in the polls.  Mater Dei (2-1) grabbed one first-place vote and nine second-place votes to edge out Foothill for No. 2.  Foothill garnered two first-place votes but still finished behind Mater Dei, albeit barely.  The Knights are off to a red-hot 6-0 start (including Monday night’s game) and have a noteworthy win over La Costa Canyon.

Santa Margarita (3-0) and Trabuco Hills (4-1) rounded out the top 5 in that order.  They face one another on Thursday in what will be a closely watched game.

Further down the rankings, Yorba Linda made its first appearance in the Top 20 this season, coming in at No. 17. University and Los Alamitos switched positions with Los Al moving up to No. 10 and Uni falling to No. 12.
