St. Margaret’s Rules the South

For the second time in three years, the St. Margaret’s boys lacrosse team wears the South Division crown.  Powered by Ryan Harnisch-ignited runs to open the third and fourth quarters, the Tartans overcame an early 3-1 deficit and defeated J Serra 14-9 to capture the title.  Harnisch won 21 of 24 faceoffs.  Goalie Payton Fales took home the Most Outstanding Player Award after making 14 saves to keep the high powered J Serra offense in check.

Much like the earlier girls game and typical for a St. Margaret’s game there were more heroes than headline space in a total team effort. Ryan Harnisch made his intentions known early:

In a game of runs, J Serra’s senior leadership responded nicely with Jake Schleppy, Logan Olmsted, and Yuta Murata running off three unanswered goals between the 9:30 and 8 minute mark to put the Lions into the lead 3-1. It is difficult to sustain runs though when facing Harnisch’s faceoff prowess  and the Tartans’ ability to execute when they have the ball, so the Lions lead did not last long. Two goals from Kevin Cox and solo goals from Fernando Delgado and Sam Harnisch gave the Tartans a 5-3 lead.  J Serra goals from Yuta Murata and James Yanes  and two St. Margaret’s goals (Erik Suh and Samuel Harnisch) closed the half at 7-5 in favor of the Tartans.

The Harnisch brothers put on a show to open the second half and push the St. Margaret’s lead to 10-5.  Ryan won all three opening faceoffs, dished off to Samuel for two goals and kept one for himself. A Yanes transition goal broke the spell but Shanks got one right back from St. Margaret’s to make it 11-6 at the end of three quarters.

The Lions tried to get back in the game in the fourth quarter on goals from Murata, Matt Karzak, and Yanes, but it was to no avail as the Tartans put up three of their own (two from Suh and one from Samuel Harnisch) to reach the final count of 14-9.

J Serra finishes the season 15-5.  The St. Margaret’s Tartans have a 12:30 appointment on Saturday with Palos Verdes at Mira Costa High School.
