Koa Todd scored four goals and added an assist to help St. Margaret’s defeat Harvard-Westlake 11-5 in an important inter-county matchup between two top five teams. The Tartans are ranked No. 1 in Orange County and the Wolverines are No. 4 in Los Angeles.
Todd was the primary beneficiary of another dominating faceoff performance by Stuart Pollard. Pollard gave his teammates possession of the ball on 18 of his 21 opportunities. Duke Ballard won his only faceoff of the night, to give the Tartans an 86% success rate for the night.
St. Margaret’s jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and never looked back. H-W stayed close throughout the first half but never really threatened. Cooper Barkate’s (2g, 1a) late man-up goal gave the Tartans a 5-2 halftime lead and that momentum carried into the second half.
Sparked by a Groeninger-brother collaboration, Matt (1g, 1a) dishing off to big brother Kevin (1g,3a) for Kevin’s third quarter goal, the Tartans continued to build the lead and were up 8-3 after Todd scored on the opening possession of Q4. With Pollard controlling faceoffs and the team sweeping up 32 of the 44 groundballs in the game, that lead was sufficient, and the Tartans walked away with the 11-5 victory.
Nate Sanchez (2g) and Will Reinkensmeyer (1g) also tallied for St. Margaret’s. Zane Handy (8 saves) teamed up with his defense to hold Harvard-Westlake to their lowest point total of the young season.
St. Margaret’s (3-0) plays Loyola in a rematch of last year’s Southern Section championship game on Saturday at 11 a.m. while Harvard Westlake (2-3) plays Agoura at home on Friday at 7 p.m.
