St. Margaret’s notched its seventh win of the season (and fifth in a row) with a convincing 15-13 victory over Sacred Heart Preparatory at the Jerry Langkammerer Lacrosse Invitational. The tournament, held on the San Francisco campus of St. Ignatius College Preparatory School, brings together eight elite teams from Northern California, Arizona, Oregon, and Southern California for a three-day tournament in the City by the Bay.
The game was tight in the first half. Each time one team made a run, the other team came roaring back with goals of its own to keep the game tight. At half-time the Tartans lead 7-6.
In the third quarter St. Margaret’s surged ahead for good with six goals to blow open the tight contest and take a 13-9 lead by the end of the quarter.
Sacred Heart refused to go away quietly however. In the fourth quarter the Gators added four goals to their tally and the Tartans were forced to add two key goals in the final frame to preserve the victory. In the end, St. Margaret’s outlasted Sacred Heart using an overwhelming scoring barrage on offense, an overwhelming advantage at the face-off X, and defensively closing down the Gators when it mattered most.
The Tartans were led offensively by senior attackman Alex Waller who had a monster game with six key goals for St. Margaret’s. Senior attackman Chase Williams quarterbacked the Tartan’s high-scoring offense and added three goals and two assists of his own. Junior middie Hunter Edington added three goals and was a tireless ball carrier on both sides of the field. Freshman attackman Sam Harnish (2g) and junior middie Josh Davis (1g, 3a) also scored for the Tartans, and sophomore middie Ryan Harnish added two key assists. Freshman middie Nick Shanks was also a strong contributor on offense for St. Margaret’s.
Ryan Harnish had a dominating performance at the face-off X winning substantially all of the game’s face-offs gaving the Tartan’s an overwhelming possession advantage and keeping the ball out of the Gators hands all afternoon.
Senior defenseman Brandon Suchand, senior LSM Scott McGowan, sophomore defenseman John Connelly, and sophomore defenseman Fernando Delgado also played strong games on defense for St. Margaret’s especially in the first half to limit the Gator’s offensive runs.
Next up for St. Margaret’s is a Friday afternoon match against Marin Catholic.
