St. Margaret’s Defeats JSerra 17-11 to Capture Trinity League Title

taSt. Margaret’s Episcopal School capped its 2013 regular season campaign with another convincing victory over archrival JSerra Catholic High School 17-11 on a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon at JSerra.

The large crowd was expecting an exciting contest and the boys from St. Margaret’s and JSerra did not disappoint. The game was extremely tense and tight in the first half. The Lions scored the first goal of the contest on a near end-to-end clear and shot by junior middie Brenden Lynch (1g, 1a). St. Margaret’s answered with three straight goals of their own from junior middie Josh Davis (3g) who has his long shot working, junior middie Hunter Edington (5g, 1a) who was also a sniper from the outside, and senior attack Alex Waller (6g, 1a) a dominating inside force for the Tartans. The Tartan’s pass oriented offensive led by senior attack Chase Williams (6a) was sharing the ball, which provided plenty of chances for the Tartans. JSerra goaltender made several big saves to keep them in the game.

After the Tartans took the lead 3-1, JSerra answered back with three goals including two from Cole Schleppy (3g) and one from James Yanes (3g) to take the lead 4-3 early in the second quarter. The Lions were effective all afternoon from the outside. The Tartans were able to provide an answer of their own however with two more goals from Alex Waller before the end of the half off of assists from Chase Williams to take a 5-4 lead into the break.

In the second half it was St. Margaret’s control of the faceoff X, its high scoring offense, and too many man-down situations for JSerra that made the difference. The Tartan’s offense continues to click with 61 goals in the last four games. In addition, Sophomore middie Nick Shanks who has played a crucial role carrying the ball for the Tartans this season, senior LSM (1a), senior middie James Yorke, senior defenseman Brandon Suchand (1a), and senior defensive middie Winston Robinson were effective on clears to keep the ball out of the Tartan’s defensive zone. The Tartan’s rides were also highly effective in the second half.

In the third quarter the Tartans scored seven goals and limited the Lion’s dangerous offense to four to open up a 12-8 lead at the end of the third frame. After that the Tartans set it on cruise control with four more goals in the fourth quarter to pull away with a final score of 17 to 11. If the Tartan’s stick to their team-first attack, they will be a factor in the playoffs. Tartan goals in the second half were scored by freshman attack Samuel Harnisch (2g) one of the best finishers in the OC, Alex Waller, Hunter Edington, and sophomore middie Ryan Harnisch (1g, 1a) who showed his power shot coming straight down the alley. JSerra goals in the second half were scored by Cole Schleppy, Jake Schleppy (2g, 2a), James Yanes, Anthony Demaio (1g) and Logan Olmsted (1g).

On the defensive side of the field, the Tartans were able to contain the Lion’s big guns enough to give the Tartan’s the edge. Sophomore defenseman , and sophomore defenseman John Connelly (2gb) played their steady-Eddie games as usual. Ryan Harnisch dominated the face-off X for St. Margaret’s for the game and senior goalie Austin Birch made the saves when it mattered especially in the second half.

With the win the Tartans captured the coveted Trinity League title with a perfect 8-0 record. St. Margaret’s was 13-4 overall for the season and also went 3-0 in the prestigious St. Ignatius Tournament over Spring Break.

JSerra ended their impressive regular season 6-2 in the Trinity League for second place and 12-4 overall for the season.

The Tartans are ranked No. 2 by MaxLaxOC.com and No. 4 in the Southern Section CIF by LaxPower.com heading into the playoffs. JSerra ends their regular season ranked No. 4 by MaxLaxOC.com and No. 8 by LaxPower.com in the Southern Section CIF. The Lions will certainly be a factor in this year’s playoffs.
