St. Margaret’s Comes Up Short Against La Costa Canyon

La Costa Canyon defeated St. Margaret’s 7–3 on Tuesday night in San Diego.  The Tartans kept the score close all night battling the highly ranked Mavericks all evening and never giving up the fight.

At the end of the first quarter the teams were locked in a scoreless tie with both squads playing tight defense.

In the second quarter both teams opened up offensively applying back and forth attacks on the other’s cage.  La Costa Canyon opened the scoring with three goals in the second quarter to go up 3–0 at half time.

Coach Glen Miles had his guys fired up to start the second half however.  Senior attackman Alex Waller (1g) scored for the Tartans on a bounce shot from right of the cage on a pretty feed from senior attackman Chase Williams (1g, 1a) to make it 3-1.   The Tartans scored again later in the third quarter with Chase Williams charging from X to beat the Maverick’s goalie cleanly with a hard shot from left of the cage to close the gap to 3–2.  La Costa Canyon scored another goal late in the quarter to make it 4-2.

In the fourth frame the Mavericks’ constant pressure proved too much for the Tartans with the San Diego squad scoring three more times before St. Margaret’s added a final goal with man up from sophomore attackman Paddy Fallon (1g) off of a laser skip pass from junior midfielder Josh Davis (1a).

Both teams played tight defense throughout the game.  The Mavericks applied constant offensive pressure, but senior LSM Brandon Suchand, senior defenseman , sophomore defenseman John Connelly, and sophomore defenseman played strong games on defense for the Tartans to keep the game close.  Senior goaltender Austin Birch played a very strong game in goal for St. Margaret’s with 19 saves to keep the Tartans in the game.  Sophomore defenseman Mikie McGraw also saw plenty of playing time and contributed solid play on defense for the Tartans.

Junior midfielder Hunter Edington was a workhorse on both sides of the field again for St. Margaret’s, while senior midfielder James Yorke, freshman attackman Sam Harnish and freshman midfielder Nick Shanks also played strong games for the Tartans.

Next up for St. Margaret’s is an away game against Newport Harbor on Saturday.
