Southron Goes Beastmode, Leads Mater Dei over Servite

No. 19 Mater Dei resuscitated their playoff hopes by knocking off No. 14 Servite in Trinity league action Thursday night.  Jack Southron, who was in beast mode the entire game,  scored the game winner when he went backdoor on the shortie shutting him off.  He sprinted from 30 yards out, got the feed from Jack Irwin about three yards out and stuck it off-stick side for the 9-8 lead with 26 seconds to go.

Mater Dei’s defense has really come together in the late season,  holding high scoring opponents like Servite and Santa Margarita to single digits in their last five games. The Monarchs play their final game against No. 7 Tesoro next Thursday. Another upset might be enough to catapult them into the playoffs.

The game was hard fought the whole way with the two teams trading goals from beginning to end.   Servite got on the board early when Stephen Shatynski scored off a busted clear and open net.Zack Johnz  responded for the Monarchs by getting topside and burying an unassisted goal to make it 1-1, which is where the quarter ended.

Southron began to make his presence felt in the second quarter.  After Servite’s Austin Felix got  his hands free and finished from 10 yards out,  Southron showed off his inner beast. He caught a feed in tight from Sean Waterman, took 2 or 3 checks, and just before running out of room buried it behind the back. The Mater Dei bench erupted, and Southron fed off of their energy.  A minute or so later it was Southron again, scoring off a rebound to give the Monarchs a two goal lead.

Shatynski got the Friars back on the board early in Q3 when he scored on a step down  and rip early to draw the Friars to within one. Southron was still in beast mode though and he teamed up with Brady Burwell on the next two goals. First Ryan Binford picked off a pass, fed it to Southron who transitioned to Brady Burwell for the goal low and away.  Then Southron just ran by his man topside,  drew the slide, banged it to Burwell, who fed Waterman for the goal.  Servite continued to fight with their backs now against the wall, and scored the next three goals to grab a 7-6 leading head into the final 12 minutes.  John Farina scored on a busted clear to make it 6-5. A few minutes later Felix tied the game in a man-up situation, setting his feet from 12 yards out and throwing smoke just under the top pipe. Then Zach Williams gave the Friars the 7-6 lead.

The two teams continued to scratch, claw, and trade goals in the fourth quarter. Burwell had another goal, this one unsettled on a feed from Jack Irwin to tie the game at 7-7.  Shatynski wasn’t having it for Servite, he fired one home off an alley dodge to make it 8-7 Servite.  Joe Alvarado picked a great time to score his first of the night as he fired low and away for the equalizer making it 8-8.  In the final minute and a half Servite had Southron shut off with a short stick. As we stated earlier he got the jump on the shut off player and caught it and stuck it.
