Dylan Varrati scored in overtime to hand the Santiago boys lacrosse a stunning 10-9 overtime win over Foothill on Tuesday night. In just their fourth year as a CIF lacrosse program, the Sharks notched their first-ever win over the Knights.
The Sharks sent an early signal that they showed up to play when Vinnie Pacleb opened the scoring to give Santiago a 1-0 lead. Foothill shook it off and appeared to be ready to run away with the game when Chase Cole rattled off a natural hat trick to hand Foothill a 3-1 lead at the end of Q1. However, the determined Sharks continued to circle their prey and closed out the second half down only 5-4.
The teams continued to trade goals and the lead in the second half. Varrati’s first goal of the night gave the Sharks a late 9-8 lead and put them on the cusp of victory in regulation until Destry Burton stepped up for Foothill with 26 ticks left on the clock to force the overtime.
Varrati scored the winner with just 12 seconds left in overtime to set off the jubilant Shark frenzy.
