How Seedings Will Be Determined For Girls’ Lacrosse Playoffs

It’s hard to believe that the 2016 regular season is over and that the playoffs are just around the corner.  On April 30 a coach committee will convene to select and seed the 16 girls’ lacrosse playoff teams.  Holly Reilly, US Lacrosse Orange County High School Girls Chair shared the following explanation of the selection and seeding process.

2016 Play-offs – The coach committee [Matt Armstrong – Newport Harbor; Kelly Baker – Beckman; Kate Hick – Foothill; Tom Messmer – CDM; Bob Mezeul – Santa Margarita; Jenna Porter – Mission Viejo; Holly Reilly – St. Margaret’s (Committee Head)] will meet on Saturday, April 30th.   These coaches will be present in the capacity of a committee member, not representatives of their school or league.

The coaches will not “argue for” or “defend” their or any other program. The conversations will be based on the performances of OC teams throughout the season.
Lax Power will be the ranking source the committee will use as a starting point for seeding selections. All Lax Power scores must be updated by 12:00 pm on Saturday, April 30th.

The committee will review the initial Lax Power ranking. The committee has the authority to adjust Lax Power rankings based on the following criteria in sequential order:

  • Head to head results
  • Goals against
  • Goals for
  • Coach Poll Results from Friday, April 29th (rather than a coin toss)

Seeds 1-8 will host their first round of play-offs unless a school is unable to host.
Following the meeting on April 30th, Holly Reilly will email the selection results to all head coaches and MaxLax. At this time all locations will be tentative and updated once schools confirm hosts.

Notes will be taken throughout the committee meeting and forwarded to all head coaches.

While the process looks fair and thorough on paper, there are always difficult scenarios to predict and resolve. The goal is to place every team in the ranking they earned through their regular season play. The committee will work objectively and meticulously to reach our goal.
