Second-Year Program El Segundo Enters Top 20

El Segundo, in only its second year of CIF play, won twice last week, despite losing two starters to injury, and was voted into the Top 20 at No. 19 in this week’s coaches poll.

The Eagles (3-2) beat Downey 16-10 and Beverly Hills 17-14. Between those two, they lost a 19-16 shootout at Brentwood while breaking in an emergency goalie due to injury. El Segundo is 2-0 in Ocean League play. The team went 5-6 last year as an independent.

Elsewhere in the Top 20, there was little movement, which is why we chose to lead with El Segundo.

Loyola remains No. 1, though by a slimmer margin over No. 2 Palos Verdes than last week. The Cubs (7-1) took a beating at OC No. 1 Foothill on Saturday, while the Sea Kings (4-1) were winning at OC No. 6 San Clemente.

Peninsula (7-0) won at Harvard Westlake and moved up to No. 4, swapping places with Thousand Oaks (3-1). Crespi (3-4) also moved up a bit, swapping with Harvard Westlake (5-3) and moving up to No. 6.
