Freshman Jack Allender scored four goals on Wednesday night to help Santa Margarita defeat Tesoro 14-8. It was anybody’s game at halftime with the Eagles hanging on to a 7-4 lead. However, the Titans were plagued by unforced turnovers in the second half, and the Eagles took advantage by outscoring Tesoro 7-4 again in the final 24 minutes.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Shane Cobb and Jack Fisher (1g, 1a) early in the first quarter. Cole Spooner (Westminster; 3g) and Ryan Harrington (1g ), assisted by Marcu Huerta (1a), responded for Tesoro to tie the game 2. The back and forth continued throughout the first half with Santa Margarita getting goals from Allender, Quentin Buchman (Bryant, 3 goals), Buchman again, and Zach Taylor (1g, 4a). Braden King (2g) and Jonathon Gibson (1g) tallied for Tesoro to make it 7-4 at intermission.
Spooner tried to get a Titans rally going in the second half with his second goal unassisted, but SM responded withs Cobb’s second goal of the night to make it 8-5 with an assist from Fisher. Then Santa Margarita defenseman Eric Rubak (1g) went coast to coast, pulling up about 8 yards out where found time, space, free hands, and the back of the net to make it 9-5. Rubak’s goal seemed to energize his teammates, and the Eagles pulled away at that point.
Allender and Jeff Graves (1g) traded goals to make it 10-6. Unanswered goals from Allender, Buchman, and Taylor put the game out of reach at 13-6. King and Spooner sandwiched late goals around Cobb’s third to reach the final score of 14-8.
Next up: Santa Margarita (3-0) Newport Harbor on Saturday. Tesoro hosts Norco on Monday.
