No. 4 Santa Margarita clinched the Trinity League championship, and the automatic playoff qualifier that goes with it, with a convincing 16-3 win over No. 14 Servite Tuesday night. Led by their inspired senior quartet of CJ Deal, Logan Dochterman (5g, 1a), Eric Rubak, and Zach Taylor (2g, 2a), the Eagles busted the game open in the middle quarters. Santa Margarita turned a 2-1 first quarter lead into 8-1 by halftime and had the clock on running time by midway through the third quarter. Dochterman and Taylor were nearly unstoppable all night attacking with everything from long range snipes to on-the-crease finishes. Rubak and Deal put on a defensive clinic shutting down a red-hot Friars’ offense that scored 54 goals in the three games prior to Tuesday night.
The Eagles’ four seniors led but as has been the case with the Eagles all season long, this victory was a team effort. Goalie Mike Gately earned his quiet second half with nine strong saves and at least three clears in the first half. Chase Lynch controlled the faceoff X, and once he got the ball to his teammates they did their part with quick controlled passing to dominate time of possession, denying the Friars opportunities to get back in the game.

For the second time this season, the Friars could not find an A for the Q. Quentin Buchman scored four goals and picked up three groundballs. Jack Fisher had a hit trick. Nick Parrino (1g), Ryan Williams (1g), and Michael Walsh (2a) rounded out the Santa Margarita scoring.
Kyle Cartwright (1g, 1a), Chase Anderson (1g, 1a) and Stephen Shatynski (1g) scored for the Friars.
Next up: Santa Margarita ends their regular season against JSerra on Saturday. They will want to finish strong to get a shot at closing out the season with a top 3 playoff seed. Servite has three games left to move up from no. 14: Mater Dei on Thursday, CdM on April 26 and JSerra on April 28.
