Senior Andrew Luher found the back of the net on a feed from sophomore Hayden Ruiz as time expired in the first overtime at Poway High School Thursday night. Luher’s goal, his third of the game, secured a 6-5 victory for the Eagles, and ignited a raucous celebration by his Eagles teammates with 0:00 showing on the game clock.
Poway got on the scoreboard first on a goal at 10:55 of the first quarter. The Eagles seemed to be taking control of the game in the second quarter as they opened a 4-1 lead at halftime on goals from sophomore Skyler Rockey, Luher, sophomore Wes Schuler, and senior Connor Ebner. However, Poway had not intentions of making it easy for the Eagles and scored the first two goals of the third quarter and get within one. The Eagles extended the lead to 5-3 as sophomore Ravi Dhouni scooped up a groundball in the defensive zone, raced down the field, and dished of to Rockey. Rockey found Luher who scored. Poway scored twice in the fourth quarter to set up the OT excitement.
Ruiz finished the night with four assists. The Eagles defense, led by senior captain and goalie Ronnie Pisano, stifled the Poway attack all night long. Senior captains Connor Mullarkey and Josh Kang, junior Garrett Parsons, and sophomore Avery Beck played physical close D throughout the game, making Poway earn every opportunity. LSMs Dhouni and sophomore Jake Grubert and short stick middies Nick Proukup, Brett Enochs, and RJ Mazolewski were constant thorns in the sides of the Poway middies.
