The San Marcos Royals outshot La Reina 36-13 in a 16-5 rout at Warkentin Stadium and improved to 2-3 on the season. The score was 8-3 at halftime, and the Royals scored the first six goals of the second half to lead 14-3 with 10 minutes remaining.
The six-goal run to start the second half was just what San Marcos wanted. The Royals also scored the last two goals of the first half, making it an eight-goal run overall. Royals sophomore goalie Shana Friedenberg made her debut on varsity for San Marcos and had 4 saves.
“We’ve been close to some ranked teams the last two weeks, but their push in the closing minutes of the first half and the start of the second half were the difference in those games,” San Marcos coach Paul Ramsey said. “We wanted to do those two things here ourselves in this game.”
San Marcos senior Catherine McQueen led all scorers with 4 goals and 1 assist. Senior Demi Robitaille also scored 4 goals. Senior Emma Beiffus and junior Simone Stone each contributed 3 goals and an assist.
La Reina goalie Gizelle Ingersoll‘s 13 saves kept it from being more of a mismatch, as 29 of the 36 shots by the Royals were on goal. Lefty midfielder Jesa Runnels scored three goals for La Reina.
