Capistrano Valley stormed out to a quick 3-0 lead on visiting San Clemente Saturday afternoon, forcing the visitors to use a time out to collect themselves. Whatever Tritons coach Mike Hutnick said must have worked, because the Tritons reeled off 15 straight unanswered goals en route to a convincing 19-5 win.
Brad McCarville, AJ Summers and Blake Berk each scored early for Capo Valley (on assists from Crosley Smith, Berk and Parker Webb, respectively) to stake the Cougars to the 3-0 lead. Meanwhile, goalie Paul Klein kept the Tritons off the scoreboard, denying several point-blank opportunities by the Tritons.
San Clemente eventually broke through, taking a 4-3 lead to end the first quarter on goals by Austin Streeter, Jordan Riggs, Collin Zines and Robbie Burns. The Tritons then broke it open, outscoring Capo 5-0 in the second quarter for a 9-3 halftime lead.
Webb scored two unassisted goals for the Cougars in the second half, including his first which snapped the Triton’s 15-goal unanswered run with 1:40 left in the third quarter. Goalie Klein finished with 20 saves while facing 41 shots.
San Clemente was led by Burns (6g, 2a), Peyton Garrett (4g, 2a), Streeter (2g, 3a) and Zines and Jack Renard with 2g, 1a each. Defenseman Adam Brownell scored his first goal for SC this year, while freshman goalie Austin Boyer went the distance for SC making 4 saves while facing 12 shots.
San Clemente is now 4-1 on the season and faces a difficult three-game stretch with games against Great Oak, Tesoro and Corona del Mar. Capo Valley is now 2-5 on the season and plays at Dana Hills on March 19.
