With the victory, SC improved to 12-4 on the season, while RB fell to 5-9.
Goals by Austin Lickley (2 goals, 1 assist), Peyton Garrett (2 goals), Austin Streeter (2 goals, 1 assist) and Jack Renard keyed the 4-0 third quarter run, and Torin Alm (1 goal, 2 assists), defenseman Stone Sims and Lickley topped off the second half run. RB broke the streak with a goal with 1:59 left in the game but by then the damage had been done. San Clemente’s offense rained 48 shots at the Broncos’ net minder who had 12 saves.
San Clemente’s increasingly stingy defense was huge in the second half as well. Sophomore Caleb Bozarth had 5 of his 6 defensive takeaways in the half, and senior Stone Sims wreaked havoc against the Bronco offense, causing two turnovers, scooping up three ground balls, running for three clears including one that resulted in his goal. Junior Max Lepley also had a big game with two ground balls and a clear. Goalie Austin Boyer had 6 saves while facing just 16 shots, and face-off man Will Bozarth won 10 of 18 draws.
Rancho Bernardo scored the first two goals of the game, but senior Collin Zines (2 goals, 2 assists) responded with his two on the night to tie at 2-2. The teams traded goals in the second quarter–Streeter and Garrett scoring for SC–and the game was tied at 4-4 at halftime.
But SC came roaring out in the second half for the important non-league win over the visitors from San Diego.
Next for the Tritons is a road league game at El Toro Tuesday, April 29, while the Broncos will travel to face the No. 2 team in CIF and No. 1 team in Southern Section, Foothill, on April 30.
