The San Clemente Tritons have been gaining momentum and improved to 5‐0 on the season with three league victories now under their belt.
Liam Nelson (16g, 5a) leads the team in points and has proven himself a threat carrying the ball with multiple hat tricks averaging 4.2 points per game. Combine his athletic ability with senior captain Branden Wilson (9g,7a) and you have a serious offensive threat that has given recent teams a challenge on their defensive end.
The Tritons have displayed a variety of offensive sets this year allowing them to initiate from different parts of the field. With hopes to improve off ball movement and speed of play the boys continue to showcase their offensive weapons and ability to finish the ball. Junior attackman Trevor Sutton (14g, 2a) has played a vital role in the Tritons recent success and will be a player to watch as the team travels to Arizona on their annual spring break trip to play Brophy High School and Notre Dame Prep, two top ranked teams in the state.
The name of the game is defense for the San Clemente Tritons as they matchup next against talented Palo Verde High School from Las Vegas, Nevada. Nick Amico and Dylan Hartanov, also known as the bash brothers, have been holding it down on the defensive end with numerous forced turnovers and excellent defensive play. Jake Brannon (6g,7a) has been putting in work between the restraining lines with 34 ground balls in five games as well as taking control of the face off X with the help of Hayden Wandrocke on the wing.
The Triton defense has held teams to eight points or under in each of their five wins thus far and are averaging only 5.4 goals against on the season. The south county squad is averaging a 7.4 goal differential throughout their undefeated season so far and hope to continue that trend as they move into a more challenging part of their schedule. Defensive coach Hap Knowles stated earlier today, “with effective communication and standout effort we are prepared to face any team that steps into our wheel house”.
The San Clemente Tritons will need to keep the spark alive as they faceoff against Aliso Niguel on Friday 3/30 and then meet their Orange County rivals in what is poised to be a heated matchup against the Foothill Knights on 4/2 at Vista Hermosa Sports Park in San Clemente at 7PM. Stay tuned for the next south county rundown, over and out.
