On January 2, 2016, San Clemente High School held its annual alumni lacrosse game at Thalassa Stadium. Over the past several years the alumni game has evolved into a ‘must attend’ event for alumni players and families.
“San Clemente high school lacrosse has a rich tradition and our alumni players are responsible for establishing our solid program foundation,” said San Clemente head coach Brad Reppert. “It’s very important for our team to have a connection with our alumni players and strive to maintain the tradition of excellence they established. While the game is fun, it’s also highly competitive as many of the alumni have gone on to outstanding collegiate careers at all level including D1, D3 and MCLA universities.”
The alumni team had an outstanding turnout including players from the inaugural SC varsity team (2008) as well as recent graduates. An impressive list of colleges were represented by the alumni including High Point University, Colorado State, Bellarmine, Whittier, Albany, Concordia and Boise State to name a few. “It’s always fun to come back and help coach Reppert with the lacrosse program and it gives us a great opportunity to reconnect with our old teammates,” stated Peyton Garrett, a sophomore midfielder at D1 High Point University.
“Besides seeing teammates it was great to see all the alumni families in the stands supporting the program,” said Stone Sims, a sophomore at Albany University. Sims was selected to the America East preseason all-conference team by the league’s coaches and had a huge freshman year as the D1 Albany Great Danes made a deep run into the NCAA Division I playoffs. Sims earned second team all-league and first team all-rookie team honors following his freshman year in which he played in all 19 games making 11 starts.
As usual the game was fast-paced with the alumni jumping out to a quick lead but the SC varsity closed the gap with a flurry of late goals but ended up losing a close game, 12-8. For the 2016 Tritons, Matt Keany notched three goals. David Howren and Nick Lemus added two goals apiece. Jake Brannon and Josh Sanchez scored once. The alumni were led by Austin Streeter, Aaron Self and Robbie Burns with two goals each. Also, alums Peyton Garrett, Max Merriman, Will Bozarth, Jay Kassity, Duke Delancelotti and Dennis Anderson also scored. Goalie duties were split between 2016 Tritons Austin Boyer and Harrison Webb. “We really enjoy the alumni and the game gives us a chance to play against some outstanding college players and an idea about what it takes to play at the next level,” said senior co-captain Austin Boyer, a recent D1 commit to Cleveland State.
“I really appreciate our alumni support and enjoy this event as it helps set the tone for our upcoming season,” said Reppert. “Our 2016 schedule is very competitive and includes a spring break trip to Northern California to play some of the top teams in the region.” The San Clemente 2016 season opens on March 2 against Newport Harbor in San Clemente.
