San Clemente entered the week ranked number six and needed a strong win before starting league later this week. The Lady Tritons rose to the challenge and beat Los Alamitos 12-7 in a non-league game on March 13th.
The Tritons’ Kiley Buckley (junior) struck early in the second minute of play for the first of four goals. Los Alamitos responded three minutes later and the teams settled into a defensive stalemate until minute 11 when the San Clemente’s Jessica De Collibus (junior) scored and began her four-goal effort. Buckley added another less than a minute later, and Los Al remained silent until scoring with two minutes remaining. The Triton defense stuffed the Griffins offense in the first half, allowing only four shots with two saves by senior goalie Veronica Petrikas. Halftime score: San Clemente 3- Los Alamitos 2.
Emily Glaser (senior) and Buckley started the second half with goals in the first minute, and San Clemente kept the pressure on, scoring five unanswered goals in the first seven minutes. Los Al found the back of the cage by minute 16, but then the Tritons poured on another two goals before a frustrated Los Al scored again.
The Triton defense held the Griffins to only ten shots the entire game. Both defenses became aggressive, with several checks to the head resulting in multiple fouls and yellow cards.
The Tritons added a couple more goals, including a second by Shay Heft (junior). The score was SC 12-Los Al 4 with three minutes remaining. The teams battled back and forth until the last minute, when the Griffins rallied with a frantic three goal burst. The last goal was generated by a penalty with one second remaining, resulting in a controversial player substitution for the penalty shot. Final score San Clemente 12-Los Alamitos 7.
