The San Clemente girls lacrosse team returned to competition after Spring Break in an enticing match up of the number 3 Tartans versus the number 4 Tritons, but vacation for the Tritons was over in a 20-12 non-league loss away at St. Margaret’s.
The Tritons Jessica De Collibus (junior) started early with two goals in the first two minutes. The Tartans had a couple of scores in four minutes, then Triton Kiley Buckley (junior) made the first of her five goals. On the draw, the Tartans maintained ball control and made a fast break to tie 3-3 at minute seven. Two minutes later De Collibus struck again, but then the Tartans began a four goal run. At eight minutes Buckley stopped the bleeding with a score, but again the Tartans had control of the draw and scored 13 seconds later on a fast break. St. Margaret’s continued with a 4 goal barrage, but Buckley found the back of the cage with a minute left. Halftime score Tartans 12- Tritons 6.
A minute into the second half Buckley struck again, but the Tartans reciprocated 30 seconds later. Both defenses clamped down for four minutes, then the Tartans got two quick scores. The Tritons’ Shay Hefft (junior) and Madison Ward (senior) scored to close the gap 15-9, but the Tartans scored four minutes later. After five minutes of relentless defense, De Collibus and then Hefft scored to keep the Tritons hopes alive, only to be squashed by a four goal run by Tartans the last five minutes. Buckley scored with 30 seconds left, but the gap was too large and the final score was St. Margaret’s 20-San Clemente 12.
The Tritons resume league play at home versus Dana Hills on April 12th.
Scoring: Kiley Buckley (5), De Collibus (4).
Fielding leaders- Ground balls: sophomore Tess Jonas (3).
