So far this season the San Clemente girls lacrosse has been undefeated in the Sea View league, but they hadn’t played against their toughest competition. The Tritons set out to continue that streak on March 29th versus Capo Valley.
Not surprisingly, things got off to a slow start as both teams struggled to get the offense going. After nine minutes Triton senior Emily Glaser got a nice feed from for junior Kiley Buckley for a quick stick score. Buckley followed up a minute later to get a 2-0 Tritons lead.
The Cougars joined the scoring a minute later, and stayed close for a couple of minutes until junior Jessica De Collibus found the back of the net. Both offenses misfired against tough defenses for the next nine minutes, when freshman Maddie Buckley scored. Halftime score: San Clemente 4, Capo 1.
The defensive strangle continued for both teams in the second half. Triton midfielder Shay Hefft (junior) was devastating with five ground balls and two interceptions. Sophomore Triton goalie Kennedy Kingsmill had a great game with five saves and a 70% save percentage.
De Collibus scored after five minutes, but it took the Tritons another ten minutes to get another goal by K. Buckley. The Cougars came up with a goal with three minutes remaining but that was all the Tritons’ defense was willing to give up. Hefft came up with a final goal with 0:16 left. Final score: San Clemente 7- Capo Valley 2.
The Tritons are undefeated halfway through the league season and will enjoy Spring Break until they resume league play at home versus Dana Hills on April 12th.
Scoring: Kiley Buckley (2), De Collibus (2), Glaser (1), Hefft (1), M. Buckley (1)
Fielding leaders- Ground balls: Hefft (5), senior Carly Peck (3). Interceptions: Hefft (2).
