San Clemente boys lacrosse defeated El Toro 8-6 in a CIF quarterfinal battle to advance to the semifinals this weekend. In a game that was hard fought and ebbed back-and-forth, San Clemente was able to turn back the Chargers with a second half surge to put the game away. The upset-minded Chargers played hard all night and battled the Tritons for every ball possession. “First of all, I’d like to congratulate El Toro on an outstanding season,” said Brendan Finnerty, San Clemente head coach. “We played them three times this year and each game was a battle. Their boys are well coached and play hard the entire game.”
El Toro held the high-powered Triton offense to three first-half goals and lead 4-3 at intermission. However, the Tritons made some halftime adjustments and outscored the Charges in the final two quarters to win 8-6. Air Force commit Nick Lemus led the Tritons offense with 2 goals and 4 assists. Matt Keany and Liam Nelson also contributed 2 goals while David Howren and Josh Sanchez each chipped in with a goal. Jared Vlach and Tomas Anderson-Comas each had two goals for El Toro with Tyler Collins (1g,2a), Connor Kentros (1g) and Parker Matthews (1a) rounding out the scoring.
San Clemente advances to this weekend’s CIF semi-finals at Portola High School against Foothill.
