The Newport Harbor boys lacrosse team moved to 2-0 in Sunset League play, as they knocked off Huntington Beach 15-1 on Friday at Newport Harbor High School. Rhett Farmer (4 goals), Aidan Goltz (3g) and Bennett Cox (2g) paced the Sailors.

The winning formula for the Sailors was dominating possession and a press defense that pressured the Oilers into giving up the ball and keeping them off the scoreboard.

“A good defense is a better offense in today’s situation. We won a lot of faceoffs and we played ‘make it, take it,’ a lot. We didn’t give them too many offensive possessions and when we did, our guys pressed out and played really good on ball defense,” Sailors coach Mark Todd said.

Nico Demonte scored for the Oilers in the final minute of the game to spoil the shutout.

Louis Penaflor had a busy night between the pipes for Huntington Beach with 22 saves.

Up next for Newport Harbor (4-6, 2-0) is a game against Golden, Colorado (2-1) on Monday. Huntington Beach (4-3, 0-2) continues Sunset League play Wednesday at home against Edison (5-2, 1-1).
