Roundup: Simi pulls out OT win; Westlake wins big

The Simi Valley Pioneers won their last game of last season in overtime. Tuesday, they won their first game of this season in double overtime, beating host Viewpoint 12-11.

Few other details of that game are available, but we pulled the final score and photo from the Simi Valley Lacrosse Twitter feed.

Elsewhere, No. 9 Westlake traveled to Redondo Beach and posted an impressive 17-3 victory over the No. 10 Sea Hawks.

We’ve heard that Westlake is no longer running its zone defense (last year, the Warriors gave up nearly 10 goals per game in 11 contests against playoff-caliber teams with that zone). If they have scrapped it and held Redondo to three goals, things could get interesting in the Marmonte League.

Redondo has two D-I commits at attack in Preston Faecher (Maryland) and Josh Williamson (Marquette), as well as a D-II commit at midfield in John Langford (LIU Post). Holding that group to three goals is worth noting, whether by solid defense or simply dominating possession time. We’ll learn more down the road.

Finally, host St. Francis held off Brentwood for an 8-7 victory. Last season, the Golden Knights lost at Brentwood, 6-4.

San Marcos 9, Santa Barbara 4

In the first game for two first-year CIF programs, the San Marcos Royals scored two quick goals late in the first half to break open a tight game, then turned their 5-2 halftime lead into a 9-4 victory.

Presidio Sports had a great writeup of the game. San Marcos plays at Simi Royal on Friday.
