Roundup: Crespi Falls To Peninsula

Crespi coach Brock Livingston knew it wouldn’t be easy when he booked his 2015 nonleague schedule. But imagining it and actually playing it are two different things.

Tuesday, the No. 5 Celts dropped their second close road loss of the young season, falling to No. 7 Peninsula, 10-9. Saturday, Crespi lost 13-10 at No. 8 Thousand Oaks. With No. 1 Palos Verdes visiting Crespi on Monday (3:30 p.m.), it doesn’t get any easier.

Wednesday, Crespi scored within the first 12 seconds of the game to open things, and Peninsula answered only seconds later, setting the stage for a tight first half.

The host Panthers (2-0) then broke things open in the third quarter, turning a 5-5 halftime tie into a 10-6 lead and putting things just out of reach for the Celts.

Crespi (0-2) rallied in the fourth and pulled within one with four minutes to play, but the Celts couldn’t quite pull even. Peninsula goalie Lance Plonski stuffed Crespi’s final attempt to tie in the final 10 seconds.

“We played sketchy for three quarters,” Livingston said in a text message after the game.

Sean Friedman scored three goals for the Celts, and Jack Doyle and Cam Radenberg had two each.

The Panthers got great production out of their midfield, with senior Brandon Wilson scoring four goals, junior Koby Tseng two and senior Grant Geiger one. Senior attack Colton Michel also scored one, as did sophomore LSM Scott Phillips and Kurt Landon.

The Panthers are now 2-0 with three more home games in a row (vs. Oaks Christian, Downey and Palisades). They are now 12-4 at home in two-plus seasons under Lane Jaffe on a field they affectionately call a “cow paddock.”

Valencia 5, Downey 4, OT

The Vikings (2-1) won their second in a row after opening with a loss, this one in overtime, which probably made the long bus ride home from Downey to Santa Clarita a lot more enjoyable.
