Tuesday night brought South Coast League play to Capo Valley High School where the home team Cougars took on their former Sea View league counterparts, the Aliso Niguel Wolverines.
Capo came out firing, hoping to set the tone for what they hoped would be the first major upset of the season, and scored the first goal of the game. With Aliso contending for a home field playoff game and the 2015 SCL crown, the Cougars were clearly relishing the role of playing the spoiler. The Wolverines though were also well aware of the stakes in this game, and showed they were not going to overlook the Cougars by rattling off the next three goals. Aliso then appeared to score another goal by senior attack Jonah Rinaldi (5g), but the goal was waived off after a stick check resulted in a three minute non-releasable penalty on Rinaldi to take some wind out of their sails. Te Cougars took advantage and ended the first quarter down by only one goal, 3-2.
The second quarter was a demonstration of how bad Capo wanted this game. They continued to fight back and were able to even the score twice and it looked like they were going to be able to enter the halftime intermission in a deadlock tie, with a score by senior captain Blake Berk (2g, 2a). Aliso’s junior attack/midfielder Garrett Huong (2g, 2a) had something to say about that, and he scored with four seconds left in the half to send the Wolverines into the intermission with a razor thin 6-5 lead.
The Wolverines showed their determination to stave off the upset bid by starting the second half with four unanswered goals to give themselves some breathing room with a 10-5 lead. Cameron Lopez (2g) slowed Aliso down temporarily with a goal before the two rivals traded goals to close out the third period with Aliso leading 11-7. The second half proved to be a much better display of ball movement for the Wolverines, as nine different players scored.
The fourth quarter proved to be quite historic for the Aliso program as Rinaldi scored two more goals to take sole possession of all time leading scorer for the Wolverine lacrosse program. The previous record holder is of course the Godfather of Aliso lacrosse; Michael Traub , who is currently helping the M.I.T. Engineers to a 10-3 record.
Final score: Aliso 16 Capo 8.
