With a record high attendance, over sixty high school girls played their hardest on Saturday March 21st at Aliso Niguel High School to retain a spot on the 2015 Girls OC National Team. Stakes were high knowing that only twenty-two of those girls would find themselves battling against other teams at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa later this May.
Head Evaluator, Holly Reilly (St. Margaret’s Head Coach) along with evaluators Kevin Mahoney (Referee), Dave Elkins (Aliso Niguel Head Coach), Cressita Bowman (Mater Dei Head Coach), Aly Vislocky (CDM Head Coach), Jessica Murray (CDM Assistant Coach), Kat Gartner (El Toro Head Coach) and John Capristo from oclaxgoalie.com closely evaluated each girl as they worked through the day’s agenda. Starting with the basics, the girls ran through extensive shuttle lines in order to assess their ability to handle a ball and several situational drills. Throughout the course of the tryout the girls also were put to the test in 3v3s, 5v4s, 2v2s and 5v5s. The day also included specialized shooting drills to evaluate the goalies’ abilities.
Senior girls, Marissa Young (St. Margaret’s), Emily Lackey (El Toro), Allie Butler (Capo Valley), Clare Laughery (Aliso Niguel), and Jannelle Philips (Trabuco) from the 2014 Girls OC National Team and Hannah Upshaw (Foothill) from the 2013 Girls OC National Team came to help and support the girls throughout the tryout. The senior girls were excited to see the outcome of the tryout as they reminisced on their days on the team. Butler commented that “I made my best friends there” and Lackey said that is was the “best experience of her life.”
The tryout was a success and the team that will represent Orange County was announced earlier on Sunday afternoon. Congratulations to all the girls on the team and great work to all the girls who came out to Saturday’s tryout.
